AdventureSail® 2025: Empowering the Next Generation of Young Women Sailors

July 31, 2025 – [Chicago, IL] – The Women’s Sailing Foundation (WSF) and its program of the National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) are proud to launch AdventureSail® 2025, an enriching mentoring and sailing initiative for girls aged 9 to 14, aimed at breaking down barriers to sailing and encouraging long-lasting engagement with the sport.
Founded in 1996 by sailing pioneer and National Sailing Hall of Famer Doris Colgate, AdventureSail® has introduced hundreds of young girls from underserved communities nationwide to sailing, teamwork, navigation, and maritime confidence. Each year, over 150 girls participate through volunteer-led events hosted by community sailing centers, yacht clubs, and partnering organizations.

AdventureSail® is a free sailing and mentorship program for girls ages 9–14, designed to introduce young participants—particularly from underserved communities—to the joy and empowerment of sailing. Through a day of on-the-water experience, team building, and mentorship with experienced female sailors, girls discover confidence, collaboration, and the possibilities that come from learning a new skill.

Great Lakes Sailing, home to the Sail Her Dreams STEM + Sailing Academy, is thrilled to bring this impactful program to the Chicago lakefront for another year of adventure, inspiration, and community. The event will take place at Montrose Harbor from 10AM-2PM and feature hands-on sailing, engaging shore activities, and positive mentorship in a safe, supportive environment.

Why AdventureSail® Matters

Founded in 1996 by sailing icon Doris Colgate, AdventureSail® removes barriers to sailing and opens doors to new opportunities in sports, leadership, and even STEM careers. By partnering with local sailing schools like Great Lakes Sailing, the program connects girls with female mentors and role models who inspire them to dream big and chart their own course.

How to Support

Community members are encouraged to volunteer, donate supplies, or sponsor a participant. Local businesses can help provide lunch, gear, or giveaways to enhance the day. Contact info@greatlakessailing.us to get involved.
